How to Plant Apple Trees

Best time to plant "Early Spring"

  • Dig a hole that is one and a half times as deep as the rootball length and at least twice as wide as the root spread. Pile soil to the side.

  • Prune away twisted and broken or dead roots. Cut back roots so that all are about same length. Prune back one third of top of tree.

  • Mound soil mixed with compost in hole so that the area where the trunk attaches to roots is above ground level.

  • Position a wooden stake in the planting hole 2-3 inches away from the tree, making sure you do not sever any roots. Firm soil around the stake.

  • Fill the hole with the soil in three inch increments and firm gently after each addition of soil to eliminate air pockets. Water well and regularly.
